Screw-Retained vs. Cement-Retained Implant Crowns: Which One Is Better?

At Space Dental in Hawthorne, we believe that long-term success starts with choosing the right type of implant crown. When it comes to restoring missing teeth with implants, there are two main types of crowns:

  • Screw-Retained Implant Crown

  • Cement-Retained Implant Crown

While both are used in modern dentistry, we strongly prefer screw-retained crowns—and here’s why.

What Is a Screw-Retained Implant Crown?

A screw-retained crown is directly attached to the implant or abutment using a tiny screw. A small hole on the top of the crown allows for easy access to the screw, and this hole is later filled with tooth-colored composite material to blend in naturally.

💡 Advantages of Screw-Retained Crowns (Why We Recommend Them!)

✅ Easier Repairs & Maintenance

If something breaks or needs adjustment, the crown can be easily removed without damage. No need to cut or destroy the crown like with cemented types.

💰 Lower Repair Costs

Because the crown is retrievable, repairs are faster and much more affordable in the long run.

🧼 Better Hygiene & Easier Cleaning

No excess cement around the gumline = healthier gums. This means a reduced risk of peri-implantitis (inflammation around implants).

👀 Almost Invisible Access Hole

The screw hole is filled with composite and virtually disappears. Most people can't even tell!

🎯 Requires Perfect Implant Positioning

Screw-retained crowns are only possible when the implant fixture is placed with precision. That’s why planning and execution are critical—and it’s something we do exceptionally well at Space Dental.

What About Cement-Retained Crowns?

  • Cemented crowns are fixed using dental cement. While they may look clean on the surface:

  • Cement can seep below the gumline and cause inflammation

  • It’s nearly impossible to remove without damage

  • Repairs are often more expensive and invasive

📍 Why Patients Choose Space Dental

Screw-retained implant crowns aren’t just about drilling and placing a screw.

They require perfect communication between the surgeon placing the implant fixture and the dentist designing the final crown.

The angulation, depth, and positioning must be precise from the very beginning.

At Space Dental, everything is done by Dr. Yoon from start to finish—from implant placement to crown delivery.

This means you get consistent quality, seamless planning, and excellent long-term results—all under one roof.

No miscommunication. No hand-offs. Just precision and perfection.

That’s the Space Dental difference. 💜
